Authorities in El Paso County are investigating a fatal train-related incident that occurred Saturday afternoon in the community of Fabens.
According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the intersection of East Main Street and Northeast 4th Street around 12:36 p.m. after receiving reports of a collision involving a train and a pedestrian. When deputies and emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found a man who had died as a result of the incident. Officials later identified him as 76-year-old Jose Andres Aguilar.
Investigators said the train was traveling eastbound at the time of the incident. According to preliminary findings from the sheriff’s office, the train’s conductor and engineer observed a man walking toward the railroad tracks and eventually stepping onto them.
Authorities reported that the train crew attempted to stop the train after noticing the individual on the tracks. However, due to the train’s size and speed, they were unable to stop before the collision occurred. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene, but Aguilar was pronounced dead there, according to officials.
The incident prompted temporary road closures in the surrounding area while deputies and investigators worked at the scene. Authorities closed portions of East Main Street and Northeast 4th Street, as well as nearby intersections including Northeast Grace, Third Street, and Fabens Street, to allow crews to safely conduct their investigation.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit responded to assist with the investigation. Officials say detectives are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
At this time, investigators say there are no indications of foul play. Authorities have not released additional details while the investigation remains ongoing.
