Authorities in South Carolina are investigating a fatal hit-and-run involving a high school student in Spartanburg County.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, troopers responded just before 8:00 p.m. Tuesday to the intersection of Howard Street and Simuel Road after receiving a report of a person down in the roadway. Upon arrival, troopers found a pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle. The driver reportedly left the scene before emergency responders arrived.

The pedestrian has been identified as 19-year-old Jose Morales-Diaz, a student at Dorman High School. Authorities say the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and they are actively seeking information regarding the vehicle and driver involved.

Spartanburg School District Six released a statement expressing condolences and highlighting Morales-Diaz’s impact on the school community. “Our District Six family is heartbroken over the loss of Dorman High School student, Jose Julian Morales-Diaz,” the statement reads. “Jose’s kindness and compassion were reflected in the meaningful connections he built with his classmates and teachers. He was a young man, full of potential and promise, whose life was tragically cut short. We extend our deepest sympathy, thoughts, and prayers to his family and everyone who was blessed to know and love him.”

The district added that grief counselors are on-site to support students and staff during this difficult time. Officials emphasized that Morales-Diaz will be remembered fondly by the school community.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and is asking anyone with information to come forward. Authorities urge witnesses or anyone with relevant details to contact them to assist in the ongoing investigation.
