Authorities are investigating a single-vehicle rollover crash that claimed the life of an elderly driver Monday morning in Iredell County as storms moved through the Charlotte region.
Officials identified the driver as 78-year-old Lee Glover. A passenger who was riding in the front seat of the vehicle was injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
According to state troopers, the crash occurred around 10 a.m. on Monday, March 16, along Interstate 40 in Statesville. Emergency responders were called to the scene after reports of a vehicle leaving the roadway during stormy weather conditions.
Preliminary information from investigators indicates that Glover was traveling on Interstate 40 when he lost control of the vehicle. Troopers said the vehicle was moving at a speed that was not considered safe for the weather and road conditions at the time.
Authorities reported that the vehicle left the right side of the roadway, struck an embankment, and overturned multiple times before coming to a stop.
Emergency crews arrived shortly after the crash was reported. Officials confirmed that Glover was pronounced dead at the scene.
The passenger in the vehicle survived the crash and was transported to a local hospital with injuries that authorities described as non-life-threatening.
Investigators noted that impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash. However, troopers said that the vehicle’s speed during the stormy conditions likely contributed to the loss of control.
Officials have not yet determined whether the severe weather directly caused the crash or exactly how fast the vehicle was traveling at the time of the incident. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities review the details.
Storm systems moving through the Charlotte area on Monday brought heavy rain and potentially hazardous driving conditions to several roadways across the region. Safety officials often remind drivers that rain, wind, and reduced visibility can significantly increase the risks on highways and interstates.
Transportation experts encourage motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and remain especially cautious during severe weather events. Even experienced drivers can encounter dangerous situations when road conditions change quickly.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adjusting driving habits when weather conditions deteriorate.
