Authorities in California are investigating a fatal head-on crash that claimed the lives of two drivers early Saturday morning along Highway 46.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. on March 14 on Highway 46 east of Kurt Road. Officers from the CHP Buttonwillow area office responded to the scene after receiving reports of a two-vehicle collision.
Investigators say one of the drivers has been identified as 36-year-old Stanley Carbajal of Paso Robles. He was driving a 2024 Toyota Prius westbound on Highway 46 at the time of the crash.
Authorities reported that a 20-year-old man from Wasco was driving a 2011 Toyota Corolla eastbound on the same highway. According to CHP’s preliminary investigation, the Corolla crossed over the painted center dividing lines and entered the westbound lanes.
Officials said the vehicle continued traveling eastbound while in the westbound lane and collided head-on with Carbajal’s Prius, which was approaching from the opposite direction.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash was reported. Authorities confirmed that both drivers died at the scene. The identity of the second driver has not yet been publicly released, pending notification of family members.
CHP officials say investigators are still working to determine what caused the vehicle to cross into the opposite lane. At this time, authorities have not confirmed whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials say additional information may be released as it becomes available.
Head-on crashes are among the most severe types of traffic collisions due to the direct impact between vehicles traveling in opposite directions.
