Virginia State Police report that a fatal crash occurred Monday evening in Buckingham County during hazardous weather conditions. At approximately 8:06 p.m. on March 16, authorities responded to a single-vehicle accident on Constitution Road, just north of Slate River Mill Road.

Police say a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, traveling southbound, encountered dangerous road conditions caused by severe weather. The vehicle struck the upper branches of a downed tree partially blocking the roadway.

The driver, later identified as 64-year-old Demita Joann Jackson of Dillwyn, lost control of the vehicle after hitting the tree. The car then veered off the road and struck another tree.

Jackson, who was the only occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed she was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Authorities emphasize that adverse weather and limited visibility contributed to the accident.

The Virginia State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Officials encourage drivers to exercise caution during severe weather and be mindful of road hazards.

This incident highlights the importance of safe driving practices, particularly during periods of hazardous conditions. Local law enforcement and safety experts recommend slowing down, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles, and remaining alert for unexpected obstacles on the road.

Community members are reminded to report fallen trees or other roadway hazards to local authorities promptly to prevent similar incidents.

Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses. Residents are urged to follow official channels for safety advisories and road condition reports.
