Authorities in San Diego are working to piece together the details of a tense encounter earlier this month that ended with an officer discharging a firearm in the East Village area. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, the situation unfolded around 5 p.m. on April 15 near 16th Street and Island Avenue.
Officers from the San Diego Police Department responded after receiving emergency calls about a serious altercation involving a woman reportedly armed with a dangerous object. Upon arrival, officers issued repeated verbal commands, instructing the individual to stop and comply.
Officials say the situation escalated when the woman moved toward officers despite those warnings. In response, one officer, identified as Yand Grijalva, discharged his weapon. The suspect was also subdued using a conducted energy device during the incident.
Emergency aid was provided at the scene before the woman, later identified as 32-year-old Denise Guzman, was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Authorities confirmed that no officers were harmed, and the individual initially reported as a victim did not sustain injuries.
The suspect has since been taken into custody and is facing multiple charges related to the incident. Meanwhile, investigators are actively reviewing evidence and speaking with witnesses to better understand the sequence of events.
As part of standard procedure, the case will undergo further review by prosecutors and internal departments to determine whether all actions taken were appropriate. Officials are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward as the investigation continues.
